SUMMARY:Marquis Hill: Composers Collective
DESCRIPTION:One of the finest trumpeters in jazz today\, Marquis Hill is a composer and bandleader whose “pan-musical vision recognizes all Black music—jazz\, R&B\, hip-hop\, etc.—as one long continuum” (The Big Takeover). \nBorn and raised on Chicago’s South Side\, Hill absorbed the jazz tradition formally and from gigs and jam sessions with elders. By the time he won the 2014 Thelonious Monk competition\, his reputation for fluid virtuosity had been firmly established as a member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra\, an in-demand sideman\, and a leader with several buzzworthy albums to his credit. Since then\, he’s received glowing critical acclaim\, topped the DownBeat “Rising Star–Trumpet” Critics Poll\, toured nonstop with his group Blacktet\, and worked with a jazz who’s-who that includes Marcus Miller\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Kurt Elling\, Joe Lovano\, and Makaya McCraven. \n“Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox” celebrates the compositions of friends\, colleagues\, and heroes invited to compose a piece with Marquis specifically in mind. “I was thinking about the tradition in jazz where Dexter Gordon would record a Lee Morgan composition\, or Freddie Hubbard would record a Wayne Shorter composition\,” muses Hill. “I started to wonder\, ‘When did we stop doing that\, playing each other’s music?’ In addition to Hill’s soulful\, eclectic modern jazz compositions\, the new album includes pieces by Ernest Dawkins\, Jeff Parker\, Marcus Strickland\, SABA\, and Joel Ross\, plus guest appearances by Gerald Clayton\, Makaya McCraven\, Caroline Davis\, and more. \nJoining Hill for this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival performance are pianist Michael King and drummer Corey Fonville\, who both contributed pieces to the album\, as well as bassist Micah Collier\, a rising star in the Chicago scene. \nThis is an accessible venue. If assistance is required please contact: boxoffice@coastaljazz.ca \nPlease Note: Seating is limited with a mix of seating and standing room. Arrive early for seating. Box Office & Lobby open at 6:30 PM; House opens at 7:00 PM; the show starts at 7:30 PM \nWe are grateful for the support of the Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Foundation.

SUMMARY:Kenton Loewen with Jesse Zubot
DESCRIPTION:Centred by his warm and emotional baritone\, Kenton Loewen’s alt/psych/folk debut album is “an explosive listen” (Vancouver Sun). \nOne of Canada’s premier drummers in creative improv (Gord Grdina\, Ken Vandermark\, Mats Gustafsson) and rock (with Dan Mangan + Blacksmith and in the original lineup of Mother Mother)\, the JUNO Award-winner is also a captivating singer-songwriter. His deeply personal songs about obsession\, depression\, and old-school heartbreak take on almost hallucinogenic qualities in collaboration with producer Jesse Zubot. A violinist and sonic shaper unlike any other\, Zubot is known for his longtime collaboration with Tanya Tagaq and film scores like Bones of Crows and Indian Horse. \nPlease note\, Caley Watts was scheduled to be on this bill but her performance has been cancelled for this evening. We hope to present her again at a later date.

SUMMARY:MESTIZX
DESCRIPTION:MESTIZX is an eclectic and celebratory expression of post-genre\, de-colonial latinx music. Bolivian-born singer/multi-instrumentalist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago expat drummer Frank Rosaly’s 2024 debut on International Anthem and Nonesuch Records is “visionary music with boundaryless imagination and creativity” (AllMusic) that steers pre-and post-colonial Latin American rhythms into a collision with avant jazz\, Chicago post-rock\, minimalism\, electronica\, and folk. \nPartners in marriage and art\, the Amsterdam-based Ferragutti and Rosaly dive into their respective Bolivian\, Brazilian\, and Puerto Rican roots to create deeply personal meditations on decolonization and the defiant power of ritual and protest. They chose the title MESTIZX — a non-gendered version of the Spanish colonial word for a “mixed person” — to both challenge and embrace the liminality of their identities and artistic practices. Ferragutti’s notable collaborators include Alabaster DePlume\, jaimie branch\, Ab Baars\, Eric Boeren\, and Mary Oliver\, while Rosaly has worked with Fennesz\, Jeff Parker\, Thurston Moore\, Nels Cline\, Colin Stetson\, and many others. \nWith Ben Boye on keys\, autoharp\, and octatrack\, James McClure on trumpet and synth\, and bassist Nate McBride\, MESTIZX’s “infectiously kinetic compositions” (The Guardian) are a movement-inducing lifeline of communal\, celebratory\, soul-baring music. \nRead their recent interview with Stir.

SUMMARY:The Matinee
DESCRIPTION:The Matinee’s words paint an apt depiction of how we’ve all felt these past few years. Having suddenly had time at home\, the band could have easily found themselves passing the days tinkering in the studio. “We were afraid of that freedom\, and didn’t want to fall victim to over-producing or over-thinking the songs\,” says frontman Matt Layzell. Instead\, they opted to track the new album all live off-the-floor and capture the performances they had so dearly been missing with no touring. The band brought in sought-after producer Steve Dawson from Nashville to help craft the sound\, and lend his pedal-steel chops to the record. “It was Steve’s enthusiasm for the songs that gave us the confidence to strip back the recording process from our previous albums\, and just gather around the mics and hit record” adds guitarist Matt Rose. The result is a collection of songs that feels at once both fresh and natural\, a testament to a group that has honed their craft for the past 15 years with relentless touring.
