DESCRIPTION:At their 2018 debut performance\, Arooj Aftab\, Vijay Iyer\, and Shahzad Ismaily’s immediate\, potent chemistry surprised even them. Since then\, in performance and on their 2023 debut album Love in Exile\, they’ve kept a focus on spontaneous co-creation and complete immersion in the present\, weaving bass\, piano\, and otherworldly vocals into a breathtakingly unified\, patiently unfurling sound. \nIndividually\, their accolades are substantial. Vocalist Arooj Aftab is the first Pakistani to win a GRAMMY Award\, MacArthur genius Vijay Iyer is one of today’s most influential pianists\, and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily’s empathic playing has made him a legend among musicians like Marc Ribot\, Colin Stetson\, and Lou Reed. DESCRIPTION:Bassist Tom Wakeling’s “North by Northwest” embraces jazz’ past\, present\, and future\, with a great chemistry and an adventurous\, hard-swinging style; featuring acclaimed artists John Gross and Mike Allen on saxophones\, Miles Black on piano\, and Dave Robbins on drums. \nFor over four decades\, Tom Wakeling has put his bass to work with jazz greats such as Arturo Sandoval\, Lee Konitz\, Mel Torme\, Benny Golson\, James Moody\, and Herb Ellis.  Wakeling has also worked with some of the most significant rhythm section players of our time\, including Albert “Tootie” Heath\, Lewis Nash\, Mickey Roker\, Butch Miles\, Grady\nTate\, Dave Frishberg\, Bill Mays\, Roger Kellaway\, and Art Lande.
