SUMMARY:Susie Ibarra: An Ecology of Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Susie Ibarra is a Berlin-based Filipinx-American percussionist and sound artist whose practice includes composition\, performance\, mobile sound-mapping\, multichannel audio installations\, and documentary. She is a newly-crowned 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner\, recently honoured with the esteemed award “for distinguished musical composition by an American” for Sky Islands\, her work about ecosystems and biodiversity. Constantly observing and responding to sound\, nature\, and collaborators\, Susie’s recent projects include Walking on Water\, where she used underwater sounds of breaking and melting glaciers in immersive compositions; Insectum\, where she zoomed into the world of arthropods with Graham Reynolds and Jeffrey Zeigler; and Heart and Breath: Rhythm and Tone Fields\, where she and Richard Reed Parry (of Arcade Fire) created works of expansive innerness based on real-time fluctuations of pulse and respiration. \nFor An Ecology of Rhythm\, Ibarra will be joined by French pianist Eve Risser and locals Shruti Ramani voice\, Alvaro Rojas guitar\, and James Meger bass to perform compositions inspired by the diversity of rhythms found in tree fractals\, freshwater and oceans\, and birdsongs. \nA two-time DownBeat Rising Star\, she was named one of SPIN’s “100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music” and has played with an array of artists\, including John Zorn\, Derek Bailey\, Ikue Mori\, William Parker\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Pauline Oliveros\, Yo La Tengo\, and Thurston Moore. \nRead Susie’s interview with the Vancouver Sun.
