The Jazz Doesn't Stop!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the 2016 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. It was 10 days of non-stop music, but Coastal's Cory Weeds is here to remind you that the music never stops! Here's his take on some upcoming summer and fall highlights:

If you've ever come to any events that I have presented during the jazz festival, you've likely heard the part in my intro where I remind people that jazz doesn't ONLY exist in the last part of June and early July. Jazz is alive and well in Vancouver all year long. The many clubs that have jazz/music policies in the city, be it part time or full time are numerous.

You can hear great music at Pat's Pub, The Blue Martini, Tangent Café, Ouisi Bistro, St. Andrews Wesley, Prohibition Lounge, The Libra Room, The Emerald, The Italian Cultural Centre, Blue Frog Studios, The University Women's Club - Hycroft and more.  Then there is of course Frankie's Jazz Club, now in its 10th month of operation.  What a ride it has been and things were totally off the hook this year at the jazz festival. Packed every night and droves of curious fans coming to the late night jam session to see who might show up and play a few tunes with the band.  One night in particular the fans got a treat when the big Italian JOE LOVANO made his way to the stage and played four tunes, followed by his whole band playing a couple of tunes.   A HUGE success to say the least.

Having worked in this office for the last year watching the Coastal Jazz team prepare for a massive festival, I can tell you, that they all deserve a break.  A nice long break!  While the team collectively catches its breath things will be continue to cook at Vancouver's home of jazz & blues.  So much great stuff coming up this summer.

In case you're jazzed out we have a mini blues festival, if you will, from July 7 - 10.

July 7 - Cannery Row

July 8 - Alita Dupray/Rob Montgomery Band

July 9 - Brickhouse

July 10 - Steve Kozak and The West Coast All-stars

A killer lineup to cleanse the jazz palate!

Some July highlights include the return of the The Jeff Hamilton Trio with yours truly on tenor saxophone.  This is a 'one night only' show on July 21st.  We will be heading into the studio the day after this gig to record a follow up to my This Happy Madness recording.  The other big news around this show is that on Saturday, July 23rd Jeff will be doing a free drum masterclass at Frankie's.

On Wednesday, July 27 we have another special event featuring a collaboration between two of Canada's finest composers and instrumentalists: Brad Turner and Joel Miller.  We don't usually present music on Wednesday's but wanted to present this band so we made an exception.  It's going to be an amazing night of music.  The band will be debuting some new music that will make up a new recording!

There are too many highlights to mention but here are a few things coming up that will be wonderful.  July 17th - Paul Rushka Sextet,  July 22/23 - Trumpet Summit featuring Thomas Marriott and Ray Vega, August 7th - Carman J. Price sings Tony BennettAugust 13/14 - B3 For Bunny: From NYC Brian Charette

As I said, these are just a FEW highlights. Every Thursday to Sunday at Frankie's is hot and don't forget about Happy Hour Wednesdays from 4:15 - 6:30 with my quartet featuring a special guest as well as solo piano/voice on Thursdays and Fridays. Just to give you a little tease.

We also have some big announcements for the fall as well, including
