Sonny Rollins: Beyond The Notes
Time 8:45 pm
In 1968 British filmmaker Dick Fontaine made Who Is Sonny Rollins?, an intimate portrait of the jazz colossus during one of his reclusive periods, when pretty much his only performing came when he was alone on Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Bridge. More than 40 years later, the saxophone great and the music documentary veteran reunited for Sonny Rollins: Beyond the Notes. Centered on Rollins’ rollicking 80th birthday gig at New York’s Beacon Theater in 2010 – which featured guest shots by Ornette Coleman and Roy Haynes, among others – Beyond the Notes interpolates older material, including footage from the ’68 film, to create an impressionistic portrait of Rollins as a vibrant musical and social force, then and now.
