Jazz Wrapper

What an incredible adventure the 28th edition of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival has been! The 11-day festival featured one of our best line-ups to date: from the legendary Herbie Hancock, blazing hot newcomer Esperanza Spalding, one of the most beautiful renditions of “In My Solitude” we’ve heard in a long time from the David Murray Infinity Quartet ft. Macy Gray, and what we’re sure have been the sleeper hits of the festival – Youn Sun Nah & Ulf Wakenius Duo and the Alfredo Rodriguez Trio. And that’s just the international artists! Our local homegrown musicians easily matched these global stars with their remarkable performances – we are incredibly lucky to have such musicianship right here in Vancouver. Our deepest thanks to all the amazing artists for gifting us with such moving & extraordinary performances.

This year’s event also included some fantastic outdoor activities beginning with our Downtown Jazz Weekend and ending with David Lam Park Jazz Weekend & Canada Day Jazz on Granville Island. Vancouver – you really know how to party! Thanks to each and every one of you for joining us to celebrate our rich arts and cultural heritage and showing the world what an amazing city this is.

One of the really unique and exciting features of the Jazz Festival is the support it gives to young, budding musicians whether it’s through our nine day High School Jazz Intensive Program, the numerous music scholarships we give out, free workshops and master classes, or the new Sounds of Youth Stage featuring some of the best high school and elementary school jazz bands from across the Lower Mainland. The next generation of artists graduating through these programs are a tribute to the tenacity and resourcefulness not only of their own families, but also of the dedicated music teachers, local artists who act as mentors and the schools that continue to value arts education. Our organization is composed of musicians, parents, teachers and young emerging artists – and all of us are deeply grateful to you for keeping the music alive. Because of you, we have a thriving new generation of musicians that we hope to one-day feature on our stages!

As a not-for-profit charity, we rely heavily on the support of our sponsors, government funders and donors to produce over 300 concerts (including over 150 free shows) in 35 venues throughout the city. Thanks to all our funders for your continued support and a special thanks to all those who donated to our Vitamin J Campaign, and especially, to our Jazz Friends.

And last but not least, we’d like to extend our sincere and heartiest thanks to the 700 plus volunteers that donate their time, energy and passion to this organization and the incredible staff that run the event. You are the backbone on which this festival, our music society and everything else we do is built - we literally couldn’t do it without you. THANK YOU!

Stay tuned for details of our Fall & Winter series to come shortly. See you at the gigs!
