Performance Works Series

Vijay Iyer Trio

June 21 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Vijay Iyer Trio“Thoroughly modern jazz virtuoso”

“There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out.” - All Music. Pianist Vijay Iyer’s endlessly imaginative tangential melodies and crafty forward-thinking structures light a graceful fire through a dizzying but masterfully controlled music that calls upon alternative rock, post-bop, pop, progressive jazz, experimental, and cool funk. His disc Accelerando (ACT) topped Critics Best of 2012 lists. This nimble and engaging trio features bassist Stephan Crump and the always creative and surprising Tyshawn Sorey on drums. More Info.

Carmen Souza

June 22 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 +SC

Carmen Souza“World soul music for the 21st century”

Portuguese-born of Cape Verde descent, guitarist/vocalist Carmen Souza is a delight for the mind and spirit. Mixing traditional West African rhythms with contemporary jazz and Brazilian traditions, she creates “something altogether new and startling” (Songlines UK). Singing in the creole dialect of Cape Verde, her voice is idiosyncratic—almost mischievous in the most good-natured way - as it dances and leaps about. There’s palpable chemistry between Souza and her band, which features longtime producer, mentor, collaborator and co-composer Theo Pas'cal bass, Jonathan Idiagbonya piano and Mauricio Zottarelli drums. More Info.

Vieux Farka Touré (Two shows)

June 23 Performance Works @ 7:30 & 10pm $35 + SC

Vieux Farka Toure“The Jimi Hendrix of the Sahara”

Malinese guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré’s live show is a tour de force of dusty desert rock, amped-up blues, sinuous West African grooves, and the unstoppable charisma, heavens-searching vocals and agile melodies of Farka Touré. An emerging figure on the world music scene, he has already collaborated with Dave Matthews, John Scofield, and even his father, the legendary Afro-blues man Ali Farka Touré, with whom he recorded shortly before his death in 2006. Vieux’s music continues the proud lineage of his father, while adding other African traditions, rock, and Latin influences. With Mamadou Sidibe bass/vocals, Tim Keiper drums. More Info.

An Evening with Gregory Porter

June 24 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Gregory Porter“Equal parts Bill Withers and Nat King Cole”

Gregory Porter can moan a soulful blues and flit through a playful, stomping jazz number with equal power. With his smooth and smoky baritone, Porter continues the traditions of soul and jazz artists of the past, but sets himself apart from mere revivalists with his exceptional songwriting.

“Majestically affecting” (the Guardian), his articulate lyrics and affecting melodies are sincere, romantic, and deeply grooving! With Chip Crawford piano, Aaron James bass, Emanuel Harrold drums, and blazing saxophonist Yosuke Sato. More Info.

Youn Sun Nah & Ulf Wakenius Duo

June 25 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Youn Sun NahUlf Wakenius“A tantalizing cross between Björk and Melody Gardot”

Buoyant, bubbling interplay between the clear, dynamic, sometimes-otherworldly voice of Korean chanteuse Youn Sun Nah and the dazzling six-string fire of Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius (Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock). Often ranging from playful gypsy jazz to soaring operatic power in a single song, these virtuosos also deliver simple, reflective moments with great intimacy and beauty. The duo’s lively and soulful conversations include everything from Tom Waits to Bossa Nova. Pin drop moments like their affecting version of “Shenandoah” might have you reaching for a tissue, while their fiery musical chemistry will have your heart soaring. More Info.

Kurt Rosenwinkel New Quartet

June 26 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Kurt Rosenwinkel New Quartet“Grounded in deep groove and willfully uncomplicated melodies"

On his acclaimed CD, Star Of Jupiter, influential guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel creates kinetic melodies and otherworldly sonic textures through a curious blend of post-bop, 20th century minimalism, and progressive rock. His improbably precise vocalizations on top of engaging, unconventional melodies and incandescent soloing lead a hot new band through insistent odd-meter grooves and thrilling vamps. With Aaron Parks (Terence Blanchard, Joshua Redman) piano, Eric Revis (Ken Vandermark, Branford Marsalis) bass, Justin Faulkner (Branford Marsalis) drums. More Info.

Courtney Pine presents: HOUSE OF LEGENDS

June 27 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Courtney Pine“Award winning British saxophonist can’t be pinned down to any genre for long”

R&B, pop, electronica, funk, soul, and reggae have all felt his powerful, artful touch throughout a long international career (Geri Allen, Jeff Watts, Kenny Kirkland) that began to soar with his milestone 1987 debut as bandleader - Journey to the Urge Within - the first serious jazz album to crack the British Top 40. Jazzwise magazine named his latest - House of Legends - Album of the Year in 2012 calling it “joyous, brilliantly effective dance music” that blends charismatic jazz with calypso, ska, meringue, and more. With Cameron Pierre guitar, Vidal Montgomery bass, Robert Fordjour drums, Samuel Dubois Steel Pan. More Info.

Patricia Barber Trio

June 28 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Patricia Barber Quartet“Conspicuously literate and restlessly inventive” - The New Yorker

Pianist/vocalist/songwriter Patricia Barber plots a sure-handed course along the dividing line between evocative and provocative. Born into music (her father was in Glenn Miller’s band), hers is a dusky and atmospheric take on poetic jazz and blues. Known for her inventive lyrics and in-depth themes (she once spent 10 days with physics texts to help write a song about how an actual star is born), she’s as attentive to her prodigious piano skills and the highly affecting nuances in the warm ache of her inviting low-register voice. With Dave Miller guitar, Larry Kohut bass, John Dietemyer drums. More Info.

Quincy Jones Presents:

Alfredo Rodriguez Trio

June 29 Performance Works @ 7:30pm $35 + SC

Alfredo Rodriguez Trio“One of the most prolific and gifted jazz pianists of the 21st century.” - Quincy Jones“

Cuban expatriate Alfredo Rodriguez’s music has links to his home country that go far beyond nostalgia, while tipping a cap to American piano role models like Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and his improv inspiration, Keith Jarrett. His dazzling technique goes to that next level of artistry through his tremendous, unteachable feel and deep emotional investment. The young phenom’s omnivorous musical hunger and incandescent charisma has dazzled on collaborations with legends like Quincy Jones and Chick Corea. With Peter Slavov bass, Henry Cole drums.
