Hot on the heels of another successful TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Coastal Jazz is pleased to present two exciting concerts during the autumn season.

Coastal Jazz Fall Shows

Naoko Sakata featuring André Lachance
and Dan Gaucher

October 9th, 8pm at The Western Front $15 + SC

Naoko Sakata “The music was lyrical, spacious, and delivered with beautifully nuanced trio dynamics.” - All About Jazz

Ravishing soundscapes and dramatic improvisations are striking qualities in the original music of Japanese born pianist Naoko Sakata. Her trio work is marked by contrasts between simplicity and complexity, sensitivity and bold outbursts. “So beautiful that it almost hurts,” writes critic Gunnar Wiklund in a concert review. Sakata moved to Sweden in 2008 where she formed a trio with Anton Blomgren on bass and Johan Birgenius on drums. In 2009 she won the Young Nordic Jazz Comets “Soloist Prize” and two years later Naoko received the Swedish Radio “Jazzkatt Newcomer of the Year Award.” She’s released two acclaimed CDs and performed throughout Europe and Japan. Vancouver-based drummer Dan Gaucher and bassist André Lachance join Sakata who is here for a one month residency that will connect her to the city's vibrant jazz community.

Petr Cancura’s Down Home “Down Home is three parts roots music, two parts jazz, one part blues, mixed on a country porch, and pardon the cliché, it cooks.” - All AboutJazz

Known for bringing together roots music and jazz, Brooklyn-based group Down Home takes old time Mississippi blues and marinates it with New Orleans spices and a New York jazz vibe. The quintet is led by Czech-born, Ottawa-raised saxophonist and banjo player Petr Cancura (Danilo Perez, Julian Lage), a composer with a vast knowledge of jazz, Balkan, African and American folk traditions. The superlative cast that collaborate with Cancura are at the forefront of New York’s jazz scene: Kirk Knuffke cornet, Brian Drye trombone/piano, Garth Stevenson bass, Richie Barshay drums.

Larry Fuller Trio
Featuring Larry Fuller, Russ Botten & Joe Poole

Presented by Cellar Jazz

October 4th, 8pm at the Blue Frog studio

Larry Fuller Larry Fuller is a world-class pianist firmly rooted in the hard swinging traditions of straight ahead jazz. Fuller’s piano style is dynamic and vital. When playing melodies, soloing, and accompanying band mates, Fuller conveys a momentum that engages listeners. It’s a sound he developed during long stints as a sideman with a number of jazz greats.

His first major gig was serving as pianist and musical director for the wonderful vocalist Ernestine Anderson. Then he joined drummer Jeff Hamilton’s exuberant trio. Fuller went on to play with a jazz legend: bassist Ray Brown. He was the last pianist in the Ray Brown trio before Brown passed away in 2002. Next was an eight-year engagement as a member of the superb John Pizzarelli Quartet, which toured the world extensively. Fuller is now focusing on being a leader and continues to travel around the world, playing clubs and festivals. Joining him for this concert will be Russ Botten, a veteran Vancouver bassist who toured with Fuller’s first prominent bandleader, Ernestine Anderson. Botten has also performed with Diana Krall, Herb Ellis, Clark Terry, and many others. Joe Poole is one of Vancouver’s finest drummers, who has also toured with Anderson, and played with Houston Person, Curtis Fuller, and Red Holloway, among others. The show will be in the unique setting of the Blue Frog Studios concert theatre, in the heart of scenic White Rock.

Larry Fuller Trio on October 4th, 8pm at the Blue Frog studio. Tickets at bluefrogstudios.ca
