Q&A with Charles Lloyd

CJ: Tell us what inspired the album "Wild Man Dance"...

CL: I received a commission to write a new piece for the Jazztopad Festival in Wroclaw, Poland. Once I decided what instrumentation I would be writing for, I was inspired by the possibility of the sounds they would create together… and by the nature of the lakes and rivers surrounding Wroclaw.

CJ: Who or what is your most significant musical inspiration?

CL: The sun rising in the East, the moon setting in the western sky. Birdsong at 3am outside my window. Fish swimming upstream.

CJ: What would you like to say to your Vancouver audience?

CL: I have always been inspired by the cross cultural climate of Vancouver and the geographical beauty of its location. I always look forward to returning to share music again with the sensitive and adventurous music lovers who live there.

CJ: Who are your favourite musicians?

CL: Prez, Bird, Bach… but that is just the tip of the iceberg - when you love music, you love a lot of it and lists are very limiting.

CJ: Where in the world would you most like to live and why?

CL: When I travel I fantasize about living in some of the beautiful places I travel to, but when I get home, I realize that wouldn’t trade it for any place in the world.

CJ:Do you have any mottos or words you live by?

CL: "Truth is one, Sages called it by various names".
