Our Mandate
The Coastal Jazz & Blues mandate clearly addresses four broad categories: 1) to develop jazz and improvised music by presenting a diverse range of artists; 2) to nurture creative artistic activity by supporting emerging artists; 3) to build the local, national and international jazz and improvised music scene through networks and partnerships; 4) to further audience development, knowledge, and engagement through outreach, education and community programs.
In 1986 Coastal Jazz and Blues Society adopted the following organizational mandate:
- To increase public awareness of and to nurture an appreciation for jazz, blues, and improvised music
- To inform, educate and entertain the public with the diverse cultural history, traditions and contemporary expressions of creative music
- To present performances by a wide variety of regional, national, and international musicians representing the traditions and evolution of jazz, blues, and improvised music
- To stimulate the national and local jazz communities by producing events and activities in which artists can interact creatively, and by establishing viable networks between communities
- To educate young audiences and developing musicians about the history and creative potential of creative music; and to provide educational instruction in the methods of jazz performance, improvisation, and composition
- To provide an artistic and economic stimulus to the Canadian music community
- To establish Vancouver as an international centre for creative music
