Vancouver’s signature festival—the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival—celebrates its 26th edition June 24 – July 3, 2011. The Festival is pleased to announce that tickets will go on sale February 26 for the world renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and flamenco guitar legend Paco de Lucia at the Orpheum Theatre. The beguiling singer/songwriter/guitarist Madeleine Peyroux will perform at The Centre.
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS
Sunday, June 26 @ 8 PM Orpheum Theatre
This 15-piece big band is hot! The Chicago Tribune calls the JLCO “the greatest large jazz ensemble working today.” It’s a fitting accolade, as the group swings hard through the masterworks of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, and other great composers in celebratory style. Steering the juggernaut is acclaimed nine-time Grammy Award winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis whose many honours include a Pulitzer Prize for his epic oratorio Blood on the Fields. As a player, Wynton’s clear trumpet tone and beautifully crafted solos are breathtaking to behold.
PACO DE LUCIA
Sunday, July 3 @ 8 PM Orpheum Theatre
Guitar Review calls Paco de Lucia “possibly the most advanced guitarist in any idiom.” From his widely acclaimed world tours and movie soundtracks, Paco has become a living legend of the flamenco guitar and one of Spain’s ranking musical ambassadors to the world. Heavyweights like Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, and Chick Corea are some of his famous collaborators. His concerts are renowned for their awesome displays of musical virtuosity, raw vocalizing, and whirlwind dance. Paco de Lucia takes you on an adventure—from light to shade, from fury to reflection; its flamenco that speaks to the soul.
MADELEINE PEYROUX
Saturday, June 25 @ 8 PM The Centre
Stylish and beguiling describes French-American singer/songwriter and guitarist Madeleine Peyroux. She’s at times reminiscent of Billie Holiday, a primary influence; but unlike Billie, she covers a wider repertoire that blends jazz, acoustic blues, country ballads, torch songs and pop that sounds both classic and contemporary. Her bittersweet, brokenhearted alto shines on tunes by Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, and Joni Mitchell. Lately, Peyroux has written some indelible, soul-baring songs of her own. Her recent CD, Bare Bones, had London’s Observer calling it “a work of high class, deep feeling and, let’s not forget, magical singing.”
