Improvisation and Listening Studies Reading Group
An Invitation to Join a new Reading Group at U. B. C. in Improvisation and Listening Studies
The Improvisation and Listening Studies Reading Group aims to be an interdisciplinary seminar series bringing together scholars, students, artists, and activists interested in discussing social and cultural issues around the theory and practice of improvisation. Sponsored by the Improvisation, Community and Social Practice research collective www.improvcommunity.ca, the reading series will focus on improvisation as a model for political, cultural and ethical dialogue and action. Through open interdisciplinary conversations, our readings will engage with issues of social and cultural transformation in the context of scholarly, artistic, and activist improvisatory practices.
Readings will be determined by the interests of members of the group, but may include recent and emergent work by Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, Derek Bailey, Ingrid Monson, George Lewis, Ajay Heble, Sherrie Tucker, Georgina Born, Gary Peters, Theodor Adorno, Vladimir Jankélévitch, Gilles Deleuze, John Cage, Pauline Oliveros and many others.
All interested students, artists and academics are welcome to attend our first meeting, on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 3:00pm in Buchanan D323.
