Grant Green (1935-1979) was the most recorded guitarist for Blue Note Records in the early to mid-'60s, performing on dozens of albums and winning the Best New Star award in Downbeat Magazine’s 1962 critics poll. He later combined jazz improvisation with a funky beat and has been recognized as a major influence on acid jazz. Green’s distinctive bluesy, fluid and bebop-inflected single note style is immediately identifiable, but he was underrated during his lifetime and never achieved the level of success of some of his contemporaries like Wes Montgomery and George Benson. Hip Pocket plays material from both Grant Green’s classic Blue Note and funky jazz-era recordings as well as some of his original compositions. Adam Rohrlick electric guitar, Tilden Webb piano, Brent Gubbels acoustic bass, and Joel Fountain drums.
