For Thelonious Monk’s centennial year, it is unsurprising that pianist/composer Helen Sung has a lot to say, and play. JazzTimes wrote, “Monk may very well be her patron saint,” and the legendary icon has indeed played a central role in her inspiring journey from classical to jazz: Sung graduated from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and was a semifinalist in the 1999 Monk Jazz Piano competition. She also wrote the theme song for North Coast Brewing’s Belgian ale “Brother Thelonious” (featured on her acclaimed Anthem For A New Day). Having honed her distinctive style with ensembles ranging from the Mingus Big Band to T.S.Monk's Sextet to Terri Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project, Sung now leads a quartet comprised of some of this generation’s finest artists. Featuring John Ellis on sax, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Terreon Gully on drums, expect their music to, as Monk urged, “lift the bandstand!”
