Fred Stride has been an active composer, arranger, band leader, and once upon a time trumpet player for more than 40 years. He has written countless arrangements for various entertainers and performers for both live performances and recordings in almost every musical style, from pop music to chamber ensembles, big bands, concert bands, theatre orchestras and symphony orchestras. As well as his many jazz compositions, which are performed by bands around the world, Fred has also written non-jazz works for many classical ensembles and soloists. In 2007 Fred won the International Jazz Arranging Competition, sponsored by the Center for Jazz Composition, for his arrangement of Michael Brecker's Peep, recorded by Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge featuring Mike Stern and Randy Brecker. Fred Stride is also the winner of the 2008 SOCAN/IAJE Phil Nimmons Established Composer Award. The Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra features some of the finest jazz musicians in Vancouver, Canada. While the band primarily plays the compositions and arrangements of Fred Stride they have also performed many jazz classics including music by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Ron Collier and Stan Kenton. Many of the FSJO performances have been featured on CBC Radio. The band also recorded the cd Forward Motion (Cellar Live). Fred’s award winning jazz music, while coming firmly out of the big band tradition, is forward looking and features extensive solo and ensemble work.
