DrLonniePhotos.jpgA FEW WORDS with DR. LONNIE SMITH
This Friday December 4 & Saturday December 5, Dr. Lonnie Smith will be be performing with the Jill Townsend Big Band, a rare and exciting combination of a Hammond organ with a full seventeen piece band. Coastal Jazz had an opportunity to ask the good doctor a few questions.

Coastal Jazz: You have impeccable style, how does your music influence your style choices?

Dr. Lonnie Smith:
My style influences my choice of music.  People say I have a unique style which is a mystery to me. It comes from within as well as the energy of the moment. I hear sounds in every day life even in silence.

CJ: Your music has resonated with many artists outside of the jazz and blues genre and continues to be sampled. In your opinion, why do you think music is universal?

Dr Lonnie Smith:
Music speaks to the soul of every living being. It is the universal language.

CJ: You’ve had the chance to perform with many incredible musicians such as Etta James and Gladys Knight. How do you create music that not only allows your talent to come through but the other musicians as well? How do you balance it?

Dr. Lonnie Smith:
Music is so much more than notes or charts, it tells a story. Skillful, soulful artist share their unique version of that story.  It's a natural balance if everyone flows together and feels the music from their heart.
