This week’s Sunday Slow Jam features a classic tune called, “A Remark You Made” by the prodigious Weather Report. This highly influential band was stacked with monster musicians who liked to seek out the in-between spaces and just hang there. Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Airto Moreira and Peter Erskine were all fearless players who really shaped and transformed the idea of jazz-fusion and became untouchable. It seems that these musical storytellers needed more language to express themselves so they created a new one by blending rock, world music, jazz and funk together. They were virtuosic, fearless, curious and passionate. For me, Weather Report is most potent when you can listen to them live. Sadly, I never had the pleasure of seeing them live, but in this bountiful digital age we exist in, there are hundreds of videos that capture their truest, baddest selves quite beautifully. Listen to them now playing at a live concert in Offenbach, Germany, 1978. I love how Joe Zawinul begins his melody at the 2:56 mark. It’s such a tasty musical moment. Oh and Wayne Shorter’s playing is so robust and full of life. It breaks my heart a little.
