Bill Coon Quartet plays Bill Evans

Tangent Cafe
$10

Time 8:30 pm

The extraordinary pianist Bill Evans left a legacy of incredible recordings as well as providing us with many superb compositions that have become part of the standard jazz repertoire. This quartet celebrates the musical genius of Evans by interpreting and re-imagining these great compositions. The sound of the quartet is distinctively different because the guitar provides the harmonic framework instead of piano and these great improvisers play off each another with humour and sensitivity, while creating an effortless groove throughout. This newly formed group includes several Juno nominated and Juno winners among its ranks. They will play Bill Evans’ stalwarts like Waltz for Debby, Peri's Scope, Very Early as well as some lesser know work such as Comrade Conrad, We will Meet Again, and Five. The repertoire also includes some of the jazz standards favoured by Evans throughout his career and originals by guitarist and leader Bill Coon. With Bill Coon guitar, Campbell Ryga alto and soprano saxophones, Paul Rushka acoustic bass, and Buff Allen drums.

Two sets: 8:30 & 10pm
