Backstage Sessions: A Video Interview with Rumba Calzada!

Last week, we had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Raphael Geronimo and Allan Johnston of Rumba Calzada!  Rumba Calzada performs at the 2017 Festival on June 27. Here's our full interview video with the band...

Thanks for the chat Raphael! We had a great time getting to know Rumba Calzada better, and hearing the latest details about your upcoming 2017 Vancouver Jazz Festival show at Frankie's on June 27!

Rumba Calzada

Raphael Geronimo founded the quartet Rumba Calzada in partnership with his father Boying Calzada in 1991, and throughout the past 26 years, the band has gained huge popularity as one of Vancouver’s favourite, and most-loved Latin bands. Rumba Calzada is an eclectic, powerful mix of salsa, jazz, and Afro-Cuban rhythms that creates a mesmerizing Caribbean musical fusion. Guaranteed to bring the house down every time, this JUNO-nominated band performs powerful and joyful music that is widely popular and exciting to experience.

It’s no surprise that Rumba Calzada has grown to achieve huge success throughout its lifetime in both the band’s popularity and for its musical integrity. The far-reaching extent of the band’s touring across the globe, and the many accolades that the band has been awarded throughout their career demonstrate that this band is well-established and still going full steam.

Rumba Calzada’s album “Volume Three,” has been nominated for various awards including a Westcoast Music Award, the Canadian Independent Music Award, and was awarded the Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding World Recording of the Year.

The JUNO-nominated Rumba Calzada is a TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival veteran, and is joining the festival once again for what will be an incomparably fun, exuberant, and dance-inducing latin jam in the Festival’s favourite Vancouver jazz club, Frankie’s Jazz Club on June 27
