At the age of 80, iconic South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim’s sonic storytelling is profound, spacious, and searching. Influenced by Monk and Ellington, and considered by many the King of South African Jazz, he is a national treasure with an unmistakable sound. His works--such as the seminal Cape Jazz tune “Mannenberg”--inspired an imprisoned Nelson Mandela and others struggling for freedom. With Mukashi--Japanese for “Once upon a time”—Ibrahim explores his longtime interest in Japanese culture, playing “with the profound simplicity and unadorned expression of a Zen koan.” (JazzTimes) With Noah Alexander cello, Cleave Guyton saxophone/flute
